This article is so right-on, Scott. Make publicity part of your writing habit. Just work it into your schedule and your budget somehow, because books rarely get noticed without it. That’s what PR is for! Could you imagine a successful celebrity without some kind of publicity?
Glad you liked the article. It’s a huge list that took me months to create! The reason PR is so effective is that it’s a 3rd party endorsement. People will trust the word of someone else before they trust an ad. That’s why PR dollar for dollar works for books and just about everything else.
Publicity is so critical to the success of a book. Releasing a book without it is like not releasing it at all. Gaining attention for it will be a struggle. Just get some PR for it early on, so that your book will gain momentum. Remember, it’s competing with thousands of other books. Don’t let your book just sit lonesome on a bookstore shelf, or on Amazon. It needs media attention!
I don’t think any author realizes how vital publicity is until they have written their first book and they see how many are already out there. You have to get your book noticed and that’s why a publicist is so important. Friends and family soon get fed up with your book in their news feed, there is only so far loyalty will go, and marketing professionals know HOW to get YOUR book noticed. An excellent article!
